October see´s the summer birds leave us and the winter birds arrive. 55 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in October 2021. No new species were added to the list. There were first of the winter records for Common Buzzard, Merlin, Common Skylark, Cetti´s Warbler, Common Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Dartford Warbler, European Robin, Black Redstart, Stonechat, Blue Rock Thrush, Song Thrush, Grey Wagtail, Meadow Pipit, Reed Bunting and Common Chaffinch. A list of the birds seen with comments follows. Ring-necked Pheasant. One to two birds seen or heard in the rural Capycorp. So far they have avoided the attention of the hunters. Great Cormorants passed through on four days – biggest flock 40 birds flew south over the sea on 27th October. Only one Grey Heron was seen this month, one flew south inland on 28th October. Three Great White Egrets flew east over the sea on the 26th October. Single Little Egrets were seen at the Torre estate pond on five occasions this month. One to five Cattle Egrets were seen in the rural farmlands, throughout the month. 120 Glossy Ibis flew south over the sea on the 13th October. Eurasian Sparrowhawk one or two birds were seen on three occasions this month. A single Common Buzzard arrived to winter on the 9th October. One to four resident Common Kestrels were seen daily. A Merlin on the 25th October was the first seen this year. Common Moorhen numbers increased at the Torre estate pond to 8 birds. Only two species of Gull were seen this month, Audouin´s Gulls maximum of 12 birds, and Yellow-legged Gulls maximum 5 birds. Sandwich Terns were seen daily, maximum of 20 birds roosting at the coast on the 7th October. Common Wood Pigeon numbers were augmented by winter birds, maximum 147 birds. Likewise Eurasian Collared Dove numbers increased to 148 birds. One or two resident Little Owls were seen or heard daily. Common Kingfisher were seen twice at Torre estate pond, on the 7th and 8th October. Hoopoes were scarce this month, one to three birds seen on five days. Eurasian Magpies numbers were high, up to 27 birds seen daily. Resident Crested Lark numbers were low, one to four birds seen daily. The first of winter Common Skylarks were seen on 31st October. The last of the summer Barn Swallows were seen on the 13th October – 14 birds flew south, and the last of the summer Red-rumped Swallows were seen on the 10th October, two birds. House Martins had departed by the end of September. Resident Great Tits were seen daily, maximum of six birds. The first Cetti´s Warbler of winter arrived on the 11th October at Capycorp lagoon. One or two passage Willow Warblers were seen up to the 13th October. The first Common Chiffchaffs of winter arrived on the 27th October, one or two birds seen up the month end. Resident Zitting Cisicolas have almost disappeared, only a single bird seen on the 10th October. Wintering Blackcaps arrived on the 10th October, numbers building up to 12 birds by the month end. A single male Dartford Warbler arrived to winter in the coastal scrubland on the 27th October. Resident Sardinian Warblers numbers were average, up to 10 birds seen daily. The last passage Pied Flycatcher was seen on the 7th October. European Robins arrived on the 11th October, numbers built up to 12 birds by month end. The first Black Redstart of winter was seen on the 13th October, numbers increased to 15 birds by the month end. The last passage Common Redstart was seen on the 12th October. Stonechats arrived to winter on the 11th October, with a maximum of five birds by the month end. A female Blue Rock Thrush appeared on a local stone tower on the 7th October, and was seen daily thereafter. It´s not every year this species winters. The first of winter Song Thrushes arrived on the 11th October, albeit in low numbers, maximum of four birds. No Common Blackbirds were seen this month. The first Grey Wagtail of winter arrived in my garden on the 12th October. Resident White Wagtails numbers were augmented by winter or passage birds, maximum 15 birds. Meadow Pipits arrived to winter on the 26th October, with a maximum of 10 birds up to the month end. Two female Reed Buntings in the rural farmland on the 27th October, were the first this winter. The first Common Chaffinches of winter arrived on the 26th October, numbers increased to 21 birds by month end.
