64 species were seen in the Alcossebre in October 2017. No new species were added to the Alcossebre this this month. Three species were the first this year. Cetti´s Warbler, Eurasian Siskin and Hawfinch. 13 species were first autumn records for Common Buzzard, Arctic Skua, Skylark, Crag Martin, Long-tailed Tit, Common Chiffchaff, Dartford Warbler, European Warbler, Whinchat, Stonechat, Song Thrush, Grey Wagtail and Reed Bunting, There were last summer records for Common Sandpiper (14th Oct), European Turtle Dove (1st Oct), Barn Swallow (26th Oct), European Pied Flycatcher (9th Oct), Common Redstart (13th Oct) and Northern Wheatear (1st Oct). There was of course birds passing through almost daily. Top passage bird this month was Great Cormorants with a total of 523 birds. Overnight arrivals included the first Song Thrush of autumn, two each Blackcap, Willow Warbler, and Pied Flycatcher, and one Common Redstart. 6th October. One Grey Heron and six Barn Swallows flew south. One Marsh Harrier flew east. A Common Buzzard was the first this autumn. 7th October. Five Great Cormorants flew south. Overnight arrivals Three each Blackcaps and Stonechats, one each Black Redstart and Common Chiffchaff - the first this autumn. 8th October. 24 Black-headed Gulls and 3 Barn Swallows flew south. One Little Egret flew east. Overnight arrivals 8 Blackcaps, 6 Corn Buntings, one each Common Redstart and Pied Flycatcher. A Robin was the first this autumn. 9th October. Four Little Egrets flew east over the sea. Overnight arrivals. one each Willow Warbler, Pied Flycatcher and Corn Bunting. Eight Blackcaps, four Song Thrush and three Hawfinch - the first since 31st January, 2012! 10th October. Five Barn Swallows flew south. No arrivals. 11th October. One Grey Heron flew south inland. Again no arrivals. 12th October. 14 Great Cormorants flew south over the sea. A Cetti´s Warbler was the first this year! 13th October. 9 Great Cormorants and 32 Barn Swallows flew south. 7 Little Egrets flew east. 14th October. 5 Barn Swallows flew south. A Common Sandpiper was new for the month. 15th October. 46 Barn Swallows flew south. No arrivals. 16th October. 80 Great Cormorants and 8 Barn Swallows flew south. No arrivals. 17th October. 2 then 30 Great Cormorants and 22 Barn Swallows flew south. 8 Siskins were the first this year. A pale phase Common Buzzard was a new arrival. 19th October. 5 Great Cormorants flew south. Two Crag Martins and a Grey Wagtail were the first this autumn. 21st October. 30 Great Cormorants and 22 Barn Swallows flew south. Overnight arrivals 4 Song Thrush, 9 Common Stonechat, 7 Blackcap, one Dartford Warbler - first this autumn, 11 Common Chaffinch and 6 Linnets. 24th October. 68 Great Cormorants flew south. 42 Glossy Ibis flew east. Overnight arrivals 12 Song Thrush, 8 Black Redstarts, 3 Common Chiffchaff, 7 Blackcaps and 13 White Wagtails. 26th October. One Great Egret and one Marsh Harrier flew east and one Great Cormorant and two Barn Swallows flew south. Overnight arrivals. First Skylarks of autumn. 4 Robins and 22 Corn Buntings. 27th October. One Great Cormorant and six Black-headed Gulls flew south. Overnight arrivals 31 Common Chaffinch, 50 Linnets, 25 Black Redstarts and 10 Robins. An amazing 92 Common Magpie´s flew out the Juvenile camp roost! 28th October. Four Great Cormorants, a Grey Heron and seven Black-headed Gulls flew south over the sea. Four Crag Martins flew east. A Reed Bunting was the first this autumn. 29th October. 151 Great Cormorants and 5 Black-headed Gulls flew south. 30th October. 80 Great Cormorants and one Grey Heron flew south. October continued on from the fine sunny weather we had in September, and again with very little rain. 0.7 inches of rain, the average for October is 4.6 inches! The first week in October (with the exception of the 7th) fine, sunny and warm, with above average temperatures. There was some light rain on the 7th, not enough to register - trace. The second week in October started off with three fine, sunny days. The next three days fell into a pattern of cloudy/misty start, clearing to fine and sunny. The 14th had sunny/cloudy spells all day. Winds were light/gentle north east to start, then gentle east or south east. Day temperature was still above average, but nights were 2C below average. The third week in October was mixed, with the first rain and thunderstorm off the month. Giving us 0.7 inches of rain on the 18th. The fourth week in October was settled with fine, sunny and warm days. Albeit a bit cooler at night. Winds continued the month pattern, with light/gentle north east foe a while in the morning, shifting to the east or south east. the wind continued through the night on the 27th. temperature was 3C below night average and 1C above the day average. The last three days of October had two fine, sunny days. then the last day gave us a taste of winter - overcast, dull, and much cooler. Average day temperature was 25C (77F). Average night temperature was 14C (57F). Warmest day was 29C (84F) on the 2nd October. Warmest night was 20c (68F) on the 6th and 18th October. Coldest day was 20C (68F) on the 19th and 31st October. Coldest night was 10C ( 50F) on the 9th and 24th October. Total rainfall was 0.7 inches (18mm) over three days.

66 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in September 2017. No new species were added to the Alcossebre list. A Spectacled Warbler on the 29th September was the first record for the year. There were first of the autumn records for Sand Martin, Blackcap, Greater Whitethroat, Black Redstart, Common Redstart, Northern Wheatear, Pied Flycatcher, Meadow Pipit and Common Chaffinch. Autumn migration continues to gather pace with thousands of birds passing through. E.G. a total of 2,400 Barn Swallows flew south, with a peak of 470 birds per hour on the 26th September. An impressive sight. A good variety of birds of prey were seen this month. Eurasian Marsh Harrier, Northern Sparrowhawk, Booted Eagle, Eleonora´s Falcon, Peregrine Falcon and Eurasian Kestrel. No records so far of Osprey, Black or Red Kites, seen in previous September Most days had something of interest. 1st September One Grey Heron and three Black-headed Gulls flew east over the sea. Overnight arrivals one each Blackcap, Spectacled Warbler, Common Whitethroat and two Common Redstart. 30th September. 47 Great Cormorants, 8 Little Egrets and 58 Barn Swallows flew south. September´s weather was overall the best month this year. We had many fine sunny days, and it was the driest September for 10 years! The average day temperature was 27C (80F). The average night temperature was 18C (64F). The highest day temperature was 31C (87F) on the 11th and 12th September. The highest night temperature was 20C (68F) on the 6th and 12th September. The lowest day temperature was 22C (72F) on the 15th and 16th September. The lowest night temperature was 9C (48F) on the 16th September. Total rainfall was 0.3 inches (8mm) over three days.
