August a Quiet month for birds51 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in August 2020. No new species were added to the list. There were fist of the year records for Eurasian Hobby, Whimbrel and Bonelli´s Warbler. There were first of autumn records for Pied Flycatcher and Common Starling. A full list of the birds seen with comments follows. One to five Mallard were seen on the Torre estate pond through out the Month. A family party of five Red-legged Partridge were seen twice in rural Capycorp. Ring-necked Pheasant were also seen twice in rural Capycorp. Great Cormorants were scarce this month. One or two seen on the Moors rock, and three flying south on the 20th August. Single Grey Herons visited the Torre estate pond, and 4 and 7 birds flew south. Cattle Egrets were also scarce this month, only one to three birds seen in rural farmlands. No Little Egrets were seen this month. An adult and juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron were seen at the Torre estate pond on the 1st August. A total of 80 Glossy Ibis passed through this month. 60 flew south over the sea on the 1st August and 20 flew south on the 19th August. A Short-toed Eagle was seen almost daily on a local pylon. Up to five Common Kestrel were seen daily. The first Eurasian Hobby of the year was seen on the 15th August in the rural farmlands. I got a record shot of it in the distance. Up to eight Common Moorhens were seen on the Torre estate pond through out the month. Stone Curlews were still in good numbers with up to 10 birds seen in the dry Rio San Miquel. A Whimbrel calling and flying over the Tropicana camp site on the 26th August was the first this year. Four species of Gull were seen this month. 27 Black-headed Gulls flew south on the 5th August. Audouin´s Gulls were seen daily - maximum of 12 birds. Yellow-legged Gulls were also seen daily - maximum of 9 birds. Mediterranean Gulls were seen on three days - maximum of three birds. The only species of tern seen was Sandwich Tern - maximum 6 birds. Wood Pigeon - maximum 112 birds and Collared Doves - maximum 48 birds were seen daily. Only one Turtle Dove was seen this month on the 2nd August. One or two Little Owls were seen or heard daily. Common Swifts were scarce this month - maximum four birds. A single Common Kingfisher was seen at the Torre estate pond on three occasions. Good numbers of Eurasian Bee eater were seen this month - maximum 30 birds. Hoopoes were seen daily - maximum five birds. Golden Orioles were very vocal this month, up to six birds heard and seen calling daily. A maximum of 26 Common Magpies were seen daily. Crested Larks were very scarce this month, with two on the 28th and four on the 30th August. Barn Swallow numbers are increasing by the day, by the end of the month up to 76 birds were counted. Red-rumped Swallows were scarce this month, three birds seen on the 22nd and 23rd August. House Martin numbers had also increased by the end of the month - maximum 21 birds. One to three Great Tits were seen daily. The first Bonelli´s Warbler of the year were seen on the 4th and 5th August - two birds. Resident Zitting Cisticolas were seen daily - maximum of four birds. Resident Sardinian Warblers were seen daily - maximum of eight birds. One or two Spotted Flycatchers were seen, both adult and juveniles. The first Pied Flycatcher of autumn was seen on the 26th August, a female. There was only one sighting of the Rufous Nightingale this month one on the 13th August. Resident Common Blackbird numbers were very low, only seen twice this month. The first Common Starlings of autumn were seen on the 14th August - a flock of 200 birds. Up to three resident White Wagtails were seen daily Finch numbers were increasing as family groups joined up. Greenfinch - maximum 20 birds, Goldfinch . maximum 50 birds and Serin - maximum 20 birds.
