57 species were recorded in the Alcossebre area in September 2018. No new species were added to the Alcossebre list. There were first of the year records for Common Greenshank, Caspian Tern, Wryneck and Southern Grey Shrike. There were first of the autumn records for Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Common Sandpiper, Sand Martin, Blackcap and Common Redstart. There was only five days this month that no passage birds were noted. No passage on the 1st September. On the 2nd two Common Sandpipers, two Turtle Doves and one Spotted Flycatcher were overnight arrivals. On the 3rd two Grey Herons and five Caspian Terns flew south. Five Great Egrets and one Greenshank flew east. The Caspian Terns and Greenshank were first of the year records. Caspian Tern Flying. On the 4th a Common Swift was the last of the summer. On the 5th One Sand Martin flew south, the first this autumn. A male Subalpine Warbler was an overnight arrival. No passage birds on the 6th. On the 7th a Wryneck was the first record this year. On the 8th Two Purple Herons flew east. On the 9th 140 Barn Swallows flew south, and the last Golden Oriole and Bee eaters of summer were seen. On the 10th One female Northern Wheatear arrived overnight. On the 11th a Common Kingfisher was the first since the 31st January Common Kingfisher at the side of my swimming pool! On the 12th 30 Barn Swallows flew south. On the 13th a female Pied Flycatcher was an overnight arrival. On the 14th overnight arrivals one Spotted Flycatcher and two Northern Wheatears. On the 15th 280 per hour Barn Swallows flew south. Overnight arrivals the first Southern Grey Shrike of autumn and a male Subalpine Warbler. No passage birds on the 16th. On the 17th seven Great Cormorants and seven Sandwich Terns flew south over the sea. One Grey Heron flew east inland. Sandwich Terns No passage birds on the 18th. On the 19th a Turtle Dove was an overnight arrival. On the 20th Four Great Cormorants flew south. One Northern Wheatear, two Spotted Flycatchers ( the last of summer) and one Willow Warbler arrived overnight. On the 21st 12 Great Cormorants and two Black-headed Gulls flew south. On the 22nd 16 Great Cormorants and 240 Barn Swallows per hour flew south. Six Little Egrets flew east inland. Overnight arrivals one Red-necked Nightjar and one female Common Redstart - the first this autumn. On the 23rd 14 Cattle Egrets flew east. Overnight arrivals one Turtle Dove (the last of summer) and two Linnets. Male Linnet. On the 24th Two Great Cormorants, 11 Great White Egrets and three Booted Eagles flew south. pale phase Booted Eagle. On the 25th 12 Black-headed Gulls flew south. The last four days were mainly sunny with high thin scattered cloud in the mornings clearing by afternoon. On the 11th and 12th there were moderate easterly winds. Temperatures were 2C above the day average, and 1C above the night average. The third week in September was mixed with another two thunderstorms, giving us over five inches of rain. Temperature was average for night - 19C, but 2C higher than the average day. We had the hottest day of the month on the 24th at 35C (95F). The last two days were fine and sunny. 50 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in August 2018. There were first of the year records for Red-crested Pochard and Melodious Warbler. There were first autumn records for Long-tailed Tits, Willow Warbler, Subalpine Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Northern Wheatear and European Starlings. Birds passed through on 17 days out of 27 days recorded. 5th August. 26 Glossy Ibis flew east. 10 Black-headed Gulls and 11 Sandwich Terns flew south. A Nightingale was the first since the 26th June. 6th August. 24 Glossy Ibis and Two Grey Herons flew south. 7th August. A Woodchat Shrike was an overnight arrival. 9th August. 70 Glossy Ibis flew east. 12th August. 120 Glossy Ibis flew east inland. 6 Cattle Egrets were the first this month. 15th August. Seven Little Egrets flew south. Three Willow Warblers and one Pied Flycatcher were the first this autumn. 17th August. 160 Glossy Ibis flew south. Two Melodious Warblers were the first this year. 18th August. Seven Common Shelduck flew south over the sea - the first this year. 19th August. Two Spotted Flycatchers were overnight arrivals. 20th August. One Grey Heron flew east, and one flew south. Overnight arrivals one Willow Warbler and one Spotted Flycatcher. 22nd August. Overnight arrivals three Willow Warblers, one Spotted Flycatcher. Two Subalpine Warblers were the first this autumn. 23rd August. 20 Greater Flamingos flew east over the sea. 24th August. Flocks of Common Starlings were the first this autumn. 25th August Six Red-crested Pochard flying south over the sea were the first this year. A juvenile Woodchat Shrike arrived overnight. 28th August. One Great Cormorant flying east was the first this month. 30th August. Two Greater Flamingos flew east over the sea. 31st August. A hot and humid month with the odd thunderstorm. The first week in August was uncomfortable, with hot, sunny humid days. Temperatures were well above the average of 30C, with two days reaching 37C. Winds were gentle east or south east. The second week in August was mixed. It was cloudy with a trace of rain on the 8th. On the 9th there was a thunderstorm with torrential rain - 1.05 inches. Another overnight thunderstorm on the 10th only gave a trace of rain. We got more rain on the 13th with 0.6 inches. Winds were light/gentle easterly or south easterly. Temperatures were 2C above the day average of 30C, and average for night at 22C. The third week in August was unsettled. The first four days brought cloudy conditions. A thunderstorm on the 16th with torrential rain - 0.9 inches. The 17th continued with overcast conditions and light rain - 0.3 inches. The last three days returned to sunny, hot and humid weather. Winds were mainly light and gentle, north east to start, and east or south by mid morning. A moderate north east wind on the 18th made it feel fresher. Temperatures were 2C above the day average, and 2C below the night average. The fourth week in August was fine sunny, hot and humid for the most part. The last two days were mixed, with a thunderstorm and some rain on the 28th. Moderate easterly winds on the 26th and 27th gave us a fresher feel, than of late. Temperatures were 2C above the day average and 2C below the night average. The last three days in August were mixed with sunny mornings and cloudy afternoons. There was some light rain on the 30th. Average day temperature was 32C (89F) 2C above the month average. Average night temperature was 21C (70F)1C below the month average. Highest day temperature was 37C (98F) on the 4th and 5th August.
