60 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in May. No new species recorded. Their were first spring records for Scops Owl, Red-necked Nightjar, Roller, Western Bonelli´s Warbler and Melodious Warbler. A summary of the birds seen in May follows:- On the 1st May overnight arrivals included one each Willow Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher and Pied Flycatcher. A Woodchat Shrike and Greater Whitethroat were overnight arrivals on the 2nd May. Male Greater Whitethroat. The next five days were not recorded as I was in Glasgow. A big influx of Turtle Doves (43 birds) and one Greater Whitethroat and Subalpine Warbler were seen on the 8th May. No passage birds on the 9th. A Red-necked Nightjar and a Scops Owl calling on the 10th May were the first this spring. Scops Owl. On the 11th May 14 Yellow-legged Gulls and one Squacco Heron flew east along the coast. Overnight arrivals included two Woodchat Shrikes. The 12th May was a good morning for passage and overnight arrivals. one Purple Heron, one Little Egret, five Glossy Ibis and 40 Bee eaters flew east. Overnight arrivals one Common Sandpiper, one Woodchat Shrike, one Spectacled Warbler and one Melodious Warbler (the first this spring) arrived. A quiet day on the 13th May. One Whinchat and the first Western Bonelli´s Warbler of spring arrived Western Bonelli´s Warbler. No passage birds on the 14th or 15th May. Six Bee eaters flew east on the 16th May. On the 17th May two Grey Herons 10 Audouin´s Gulls flew south. One female Marsh Harrier and six Yellow-legged Gulls flew east. Female Marsh Harrier. No passage birds on the 18th May. Three Great Egrets and four Little Egrets flew east together along the coast on the 19th May. Great Egret. No passage birds on the 20th May. A Woodchat Shrike was an overnight arrival on the 21st May. Woodchat Shrike. No passage birds on the 22nd May, but a flock of 50 Cattle Egrets in the Rural farmland was note worthy. No passage birds on the 23rd and 24th May. Four very late Sand Martins flew east along the coast on the 25th May. The 26th May had an interesting mix of birds on the move. A dark phase Eleonora´s Falcon flew in from the sea - probably from the Columbrete´s the nearest breeding place. Two Bee eaters, one Golden Oriole, six Barn Swallows and two Sand Martins flew east along the coast. No passage birds on the 27th May. Three Purple Herons and 20 Glossy Ibis flew east along the coast on the 28th May. Purple Heron. No passage birds on the 29th. Two Rollers were overnight arrivals on the 30th May. The first week in May was mixed, with five days mainly sunny, two days were overcast and dull with light rain. A strong north east wind blew all day on the 4th May. Day and night temperatures were average. The second week in May started off unsettled with a moderate south east wind on the first two days. The rest of the week was fine and sunny with gentle winds. Temperatures were 1C above day average, and average for night. The third week in May had two days of overcast conditions with some light rain. The other days were mainly sunny tempered by cool northerly winds. Temperatures were 1C below the day average and average for night. The fourth week in May was mainly fine and sunny, but winds were still on the cool side. Temperatures were average for day and 1C above night average. The average day temperature was 24C (75F). The average night temperature was 15C (59F). Highest day temperature was 28C (82F) on the 8th, 13th and 28th. Highest night temperature 18C (64F) on the 28th and 29th. Lowest day temperature was 22C (72F) on the 15th May. Lowest night temperature was 13C (55F). Total rainfall was 0.5 inches (13mm) over two days. Average rainfall for May is 3.1 inches. Finally as a footnote I found this young wild Boar eating oranges in the rural farmland - all together aah!
