68 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in May 2017. There were first of the year records for Little Ringed Plover and Tawny Pipit. There were first of spring records for Eleonora´s Falcon, Osprey, Collared Pratincole, Little Tern, Red-necked Nightjar, Bonelli´s Warbler and Melodious Warbler. Although spring passage continued throughout the month, numbers of each species got lower and lower. Some species have still to appear - notably Honey Buzzard and Alpine Swift. A summary of the months passage birds and overnight arrivals were as follows:- On the 1st May Three Great Cormorants and 6 Barn Swallows flew east. One Osprey flew south - the first this spring. Overnight arrivals. Three Woodchat Shrikes and two Spotted Flycatchers. On the 2nd May Three Great Egrets flew south. Overnight arrivals. Two Turtle Doves, two Woodchat Shrikes, a Blackcap - singing! one Willow Warbler. A Little Tern was the first this spring. There was no passage birds on the 3rd May. On the 4th May. Two Arctic Skua´s chasing Sandwich Terns off shore was a first for May. Overnight arrivals. One Squacco Heron, Three Turtle Doves, one Red-necked Nightjar (first of spring) and one Northern Wheatear. On the 5th May. One Great Cormorant and five Glossy Ibis flew east. Overnight arrivals. Two Woodchat Shrikes, three Northern Wheatear, one Willow Warbler and the first Melodious Warbler of Spring. On the 6th May. One Great Cormorant, nine Little Egrets, 16 Glossy Ibis flew east. 00s of Common/Pallid Swifts flew NW. Overnight arrivals. One each Red-necked Nightjar, Whinchat and Northern Wheatear. Two Spotted Flycatchers. On the 7th May. 14 Audouin´s Gulls and one Eleonora´s Falcon (first this spring) flew east. Overnight arrivals. Two Collared Pratincoles were a first this spring, two each Willow Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher, Pied Flycatcher. On the 8th May. Two Great Cormorants and one Black Kite flew east along the coast. Overnight arrivals. Two Woodchat Shrikes, one Whinchat and two Pied Flycatchers. On the 9th May. One Squacco Heron, one Little Egret flew east. Overnight arrivals of one Hobby and one Turtle Dove. On the 10th May. Two Great Cormorants and four Barn Swallows flew east. Overnight arrivals. Two Black-winged Stilts and one Bonelli´s Warbler. Yesterdays Hobby was still present. There was no passage from the 11th to the 13th May. On the 14th May. Four Great Cormorants and one Red-rumped Swallow flew east, one Grey Heron flew south. Overnight arrivals. One Turtle Dove and one Spotted Flycatcher. There was no passage birds on the 15th May. On the 16th May. Seven Little Egrets and two House Martins flew east. Overnight arrival. One Northern Wheatear. There was no passage birds on the 17th May. On the 18th May. Four Little Egrets flew east inland. On the 19th May. Four Squacco Herons flew south over the sea. Overnight arrivals. One Woodchat Shrike, two Melodious Warblers and female Pied Flycatcher. On the 20th May. Overnight arrivals one Hobby, one Cattle Egret and one Little Egret. On the 21st May. One Tawny Pipit was the first record since Sepember 2014. There was no passage on the 22nd May or 23rd May. On the 24th May. Three Grey Herons flew east. A very late Common Chiffchaff calling! No passage birds noted from the 25th to the 29th May. No passage birds noted from the 25th to the 29th May. On the 30th May. One Common Shelduck flew east and overnight arrival of one Little Ringed Plover - the first this year. No passage birds on the 31st May. Alcossebre Weather in May 2017.
May was a dry settled month with average day temperatures, but cooler night temperatures. The first week in May was mainly fine and sunny. There was a shower of rain on the 5th May. Some days were cooler because of the moderate easterly wind. It was 5C cooler by night and 3C cooler by day. The second week in May had a bit of everything. We had four days of fine, sunny weather. Two days were overcast and dull -one of the days had torrential rain, the 11th May. We also had the hottest day of the year, so far, the 11th May with 30C. The night temperatures remained below average at 13C. The third week in May had more mixed weather. Four days of fine, sunny days. Three days had high thin cloud cover. Some thundery rain on the 17th May, soon cleared away. Winds were gentle throughout. Night temperatures were still 3C lower than average. The fourth week in May was more settled with mainly fine and sunny days. The 27th May started off overcast, but quickly cleared to fine and sunny. Winds were light and gentle. Temperatures were up to the average for May. The last three days of May were fine and sunny, and although there was moderate easterly winds, the temperature was just above the average. Average day temperature was 24C (75F). Average night temperature was 13C (55F). Highest day temperature was 30C (86F) on the 11th May. Highest night temperature was 18C (64F) on the 29th May. Lowest day temperature was 19C ( 66F) on the 1st May. Lowest night temperature was 8C (46F) on the 1st and 2nd May. Total rainfall for the month was 0.4 inches (10mm) over three days. The May average is 3.3 inches (84mm).
