50 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in July 2020. no new species were added to the list. Two Black-crowned Night Herons on the 30th July were the first this year, and adult and a juvenile. Single Short-toed Eagles were seen almost daily from the 12th July. There were good numbers of Glossy Ibis passing through this month - a total of 166 birds over seven days. A single Greater Flamingo flew south over the sea on the 26th July. A full list of the birds seen with comments follows:- Up to nine Mallard frequented Torre estate pond from the 18th July - not a common species here. There was only one sighting of Red-legged Partridge - one bird seen on the 27th July in the dry river bed of the Rio San Miquel. Single Ring-necked Pheasants were heard calling in the rural farmland almost daily up to the 22nd of July. Very few Great Cormorants were seen this month - one on the 8th July and three on the 25th July. Two Purple Herons passed through this month - one flew east on the 5th July and one flew south on the 26th July. No Little Egrets were seen this month and only seven Cattle Egrets seen in the rural farmlands. An adult and a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron were at the Torre estate pond on the 30th and 31st of July. Up to six Common Kestrels were seen daily through out the area. The pair of Common Moorhen at Torre estate pond produced a second brood of six young. So a good year for them. The pair of Stone Curlews were still holding territory up to the 27th July. No young seen yet. Four species of Gull were seen this month. Mediterranean Gull - five on the 27th July at Capycorp beach. Up to seven Black-headed Gulls over seven days. Audouiñ´s Gull maximum 40 birds and Yellow-legged Gull maximum 31 birds, both species seen daily. Small numbers of Sandwich Tern (max. three birds) were seen daily. Wood Pigeons were having a good season with up to 125 birds counted daily. One or two Turtle Doves were seen from the 26th July. Collared Doves were also having a good season with up to 46 birds seen daily. One or two juvenile Great Spotted Cuckoos were seen in the rural farmland up to the 14th July. One or two Little Owls were seen daily, also in the rural farmland. There was only one sighting of Red-necked Nightjar this month - on the 22nd of July. Common and Pallid Swifts were in low numbers, with only a maximum of 15 birds each seen. A Common Kingfisher turned up at the Torre estate pond on the 31st July. A beauty. Up to five European Bee eaters were seen through out the month. The pair of European Rollers that I had high hopes of breeding were not seen this month - disappointing. Family groups of up to five Hoopoes were seen daily. Another species having a good season. Single Woodchat Shrikes were seen on the 6th and 21st of July - both adults. Golden Orioles were very vocal this month as the juvenile birds learn to whistle. Up to six birds could be heard at the same time. Common Magpie numbers were lower than usual - maximum 18 birds. Two pairs were seen feeding the young Great Spotted Cuckoo´s. Crested Larks continue to decline in numbers, with only one or two birds seen. Barn Swallows were having a good season with family groups joining up - up to 40 birds counted daily. Red-rumped Swallow numbers were low with only one or two birds seen. Family groups of House Martins were also joining up, albeit much more common in Alcossebre than the rural farmland. Great Tit numbers were low with only one or two birds seen. Zitting Cisticola numbers were also low - maximum of four birds seen daily. Sardinian Warbler numbers were better with up to eight birds seen daily. Spotted Flycatchers reappeared from the 12th July - passage birds, because none bred locally this year. Common Nightingales stopped singing on the 1st July. Common Blackbirds were scarce with only two sightings this month. Family groups of Spotless Starlings were searching gardens for ripe dates to plunder. Single Juvenile White Wagtails were seen in gardens and rural farmland. The Finches were starting to join up with others now that the breeding season is over. Up to 15 Greenfinch and Goldfinch and up to 20 Serins.
