58 species seen in the Alcossebre area in August 2017. No new species were added to the Alcossebre list this month. There was a first of the year record for Booted Eagle. There were first of autumn records for Montagu´s Harrier, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Willow Warbler and Subalpine Warbler. If the Glossy Ibis was the main passage bird in July, European Bee eater took over in August with 445 birds passing through, an impressive total On the 1st August Six Glossy Ibis and 11 Little Egrets flew east and two Mediterranean Gulls flew south. On the 3rd August One Purple Heron flew east, three Grey Heron and 54 Bee eaters flew south. Overnight arrival one Spotted Flycatcher. On the 5th August One Little Egret flew east and Red-rumped Swallows increased in numbers to six birds. On the 6th August 5 Black-headed Gulls and 8 Bee eaters flew south. Overnight arrivals two juvenile Woodchat Shrikes and one Spotted Flycatcher. On the 9th August 8 Glossy Ibis flew east and 5 Bee eaters flew south. increase in Red-rumped Swallows and House Martins On the 10th August 225 Common and Pallid Swifts flew NE. A male Sparrowhawk was the first this autumn. Overnight arrival - one Spotted Flycatcher. On the 12th August 13 Grey Herons and 12 Bee eaters flew south. A juvenile Night Heron was an overnight arrival. On the 13th August Overnight arrivals - One female Sparrowhawk and three Spotted Flycatchers. The juvenile Night Heron was still at Torre pond, and a Grey Heron flew west of Torre. The shooting season began today - there seemed to be about six hunters shooting from first light. On the 17th August a Common Nightingale was a new arrival at the sewage pond. On the 18th August 14 Bee eaters flew south and a Kingfisher was the first since the 11th January! On the 19th August 5 Black-headed Gulls flew east. Overnight arrivals. one juvenile Woodchat Shrike, two Spotted Flycatchers and one Melodious Warbler - the first since the 20th May! On the 20th August One Purple Heron flew east over the sea. 5 Bee eaters flew south. On the 21st August Two Grey Heron, two Great Egrets and 18 Bee eaters flew south. Overnight arrivals two Woodchat Shrike´s, one Willow Warbler, and flocks of Common Starlings - both a first this autumn. On the 22nd August Three Corn Buntings were the first since the 16th May. On the 23rd August a Short-toed Eagle and Turtle Dove were the first this month. On the 24th August Overnight arrivals - adult Woodchat Shrike, two Turtle Doves and two Spotted Flycatchers. On the 26th August Four Black-headed Gulls and 14 Bee eaters flew south. A Lesser Black-back Gull was the first since 31st March! On the 27th August An overnight arrival of one Subalpine Warbler - was the first this autumn. On the 28th August One Eleonora´s Falcon flew south. Overnight arrivals one each Turtle Dove, Willow Warbler and Spotted Flycatcher. On the 29th August 46 Barn Swallows flew south. New arrivals - four Common Sandpipers, eight Bee eaters and one Spotted Flycatcher On the 31st August One female Montagu´s Harrier flew south. Overnight arrivals of one juvenile Woodchat Shrike, female Subalpine Warbler and one Spotted Flycatcher. August 2017 weather report. The first week in August was uncomfortable with high humidity throughout. There were only two fine, sunny days. The rest were mixed with sunny/cloudy spells. Two days had thunderstorms with light rain - the 2nd and the 5th. Day temperature was 2C above the month average of 30C. With the hottest day of the year on the 3rd at 36C. Night temperature reached the month average of 22C. The second week in August started off unsettled with thunderstorms and heavy rain on the 9th and 10th. The rest of the week was fine, sunny but still very humid. In some days it was 86%. Unusually on the night of the 11th there was a moderate/strong north wind. Both day and night temperatures were 1C below the month average. The third week in August was mainly fine, sunny and humid, although in some days it clouded over for a while, then clearing back to fine and sunny. Winds followed the August pattern of light NE wind to start, replaced by gentle easterlies. On four days there was moderate SE winds in the afternoon. Day temperature was the month average of 30C, but nights were still 1C below the average. The fourth week in August was similar to the third week, in that most days were fine/sunny and humid. There were occasional cloudy spells.. Winds followed the August pattern. Day and night temperatures were 1C below the average. The last three days of August were mainly cloudy and dull, with a thunderstorm and torrential rain on the 29th. Average day temperature was 30C (86F). Average night temperature was 20C (68F). Highest day temperature was 36C (96F) on the 3rd August. Highest night temperature was 25C (77F) on the 8th August. Lowest day temperature was 26C (78F) on the 29th August. Lowest night temperature was 15C (58F) on the 10th and 12th August. Total rainfall for the month was 3.3 inches (84mm) over seven days. The average rainfall for August is 1.9 inches. The heaviest rain fell on the 30th with 1.2 inches (30mm)
