46 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in July 2018. There were new species added to the Alcossebre list An Eleonora´s Falcon on the 12th July was the first this year. dit. A selection of species with comments follows. A single Red-legged Partridge on the 13th July was the first since the 20th March. Two Greater Flamingos flying east over the sea on the 2nd July were the only record this month. Only one Great Cormorant was seen this month on the 19th July, compare this with a total of 119 Glossy Ibis passing through over five days. A total of 11 Grey Herons passed through over six days. Only one Cattle Egret was seen, on the 28th July. No Little Egrets were seen. Although four birds of prey were seen this month only Eurasian Kestrel was seen daily. A Short-toed Eagle on the 25th July was the first seen since the 29th April. A male Montagu´s Harrier flew over my casa on the 14th July, the first since the 5th April. An Eleonora´s Falcon on the 12th July was the first this year. A pair of Common Moorhen raised two young at Torre pond. No wading birds were seen this month which is unusual. Four species of Gulls were seen this month Meditteranean Gulls, Black-headed Gulls, Audoiun´s Gulls and Yellow-legged Gulls. Sandwich Terns were scarce with a maximum of 12 birds seen. As mentioned in my opening comment Turtle Doves outnumbered both Wood Pigeon and Collared Dove for the first time in 18 years study here. Turtle Dove numbers peaked at 82 birds on the 28th July. Whereas peak Wood Pigeon numbers were 37 birds on the 30th. Collared Dove numbers peaked at 69 birds on the 15th July. The resident Little Owls were seen or heard most days, but the summer visitor the Scops Owl was only heard up to the 25th July. One or two Red-necked Nightjars were seen or heard through out the month. Both Common and Pallid Swifts were seen through out the month. Breeding Bee eaters were augmented in numbers by some passage birds e.g. 41 birds seen on the 30th July. Up to four resident Hoopoes were seen daily. A single Woodchat Shrike was seen on the 4th July. July is the best month to see or hear Golden Orioles here, and this year was no exception with nine birds daily. Both Barn Swallow, Red-rumped Swallows and House Martin increased daily as more and young fledged. Zitting Cisticola´s numbers remain very low, with only three birds maximum. Sardinian Warbler numbers were normal with up to 10 birds seen daily. The only pair of breeding Spotted Flycatchers managed to rear three young and were still present up to the end of the month. No Buntings were seen this month Greenfinch, Goldfinch and Serin numbers were increasing as more young fledged, in some cases second broods. Alcossebre weather for July 2018.
The first week in July was fine, sunny and hot throughout. Winds were light north easterly to start, the gentle east or south east thereafter. Temperatures were 2C below the average night, and 1C above the average day. The 2nd of July was the hottest day of the year, so far - 36C. The second week in July was an other week of fine, sunny and hot weather, interrupted on the 9th and 13th with thunderstorms. Neither storms lasted long or delivered much rain. There were several days with moderate easterly winds, giving us a lively sea conditions. Temperatures were 1C above the day average, and 1C below the night average. The third week in July continued with mainly sunny, hot and humid weather. Albeit a few mornings started off with cloudy misty conditions, clearing to sunny and hot again. Winds were mainly gentle, with a couple of days with moderate winds keeping the sea lively. Temperatures were 2C above the day average and 1C below the average night. The fourth week in July started off in dramatic style with a thunderstorm and torrential rain through the night, returning in the afternoon. It delivered 3.6 inches of rain - considering that the whole months average rainfall is only 1.4 inches, that is a lot of rain in one day! The rest of the week was fine, sunny, hot and humid. there were a few mornings with some cloud and mist, but it soon cleared away. Winds fell into a pattern of light north easterlies early am, the gentle/moderate south easterlies the rest of the day. Temperatures were 1C above the day average and 1c below the night average. The last three days of July were sunny, hot and humid. Day temperature was higher - 3C above the average. Night temperature was average at 22C. Average day temperature was 32C (89F) Average night temperature was 21C (70F) Highest day temperature was 37C (98F) on the 16th July. Highest night temperature was 24C (75F) on the 13th, 17th, 27th and 30th July. Coolest day temperature was 30C (86F) on the 22nd July. Coolest night temperature was 18C (64F) on the 23rd July. Total rainfall was 3.7 inches (94mm) over three days.
