52 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in August 2019. No new species were added to the Alcossebre list, but there were some year first records and first of autumn records. The months highlights were as follows. A male Montagu´s Harrier on the 3rd August was the first this month. Two Great Egrets, one Little Egret, one Purple Heron, two Grey Herons and one Mediterranean Gull all flew south on the 6th August. On the 8th August a juvenile Shag was photographed near the lighthouse by Brenda Cundell - a first this year. 32 Greater Flamingos flew east over the sea on the 10th August, and a Short-toed Eagle was the first this month. On the 14th August a Common Sandpiper was the first this autumn, and a Woodchat Shrike was the first this month. Two Grey Heron flew south over sea on the 15th August, and a Willow Warbler was the first this autumn. On the 19th August a juvenile Goshawk flew into a tree above a BBQ party at Torre estate, I managed to show most of the people the bird as it sat preening. This was the first record of this species this year, and what did I not have with me? A camera! Thankfully Rosie saved the day! On the 20th August eight Grey Heron flew south, and 11 Black-headed Gulls flew south on the 21st August. Adult Black-headed Gull. 20 Glossy Ibis flew east over the sea on the 24th August, and 11 Grey Herons and a Mediterranean Gull flew south. On the 25th August two Grey Herons and three Cattle Egrets flew south, and Northern Sparrowhawk was the first this autumn. A second Goshawk was seen flying along the Rio San Miquel on the 26th August. An adult this time. I flushed a Quail from a field on the 29th August, this was a first record this year. A hot and sticky month with above average temperature and rainfall. The first week in August started off with three days of fine, sunny and hot weather. The next four days had a cloudy start, clearing to mainly sunny and hot. Winds were light or gentle, normally north east to start then east or south east. Temperatures were 2C above night average, and average for day - 30C. The second week in August followed the pattern of the first week. Three days fine, sunny and hot weather, and four days of cloudy conditions. Winds were mainly light or gentle, with a moderate easterly wind on the 10th. Temperatures were 2C above night average, and 1C above day average. The third week in August gave us cloudy humid days, with the first rain of the month on the 20th and 21st. Winds were again light and gentle, with the exception of the 19th with a moderate easterly wind. Temperatures were 1C above night and day average. The fourth week in August was the best of the month with six days of fine and sunny weather. On the night of the 27th we got a thunderstorm with torrential rain - we got more than the months rainfall in three hours, three inches - the months average is two inches. Night temperatures were 2C below the average, and day temperature 1C above. This was helped by the hottest day of the year on the 23rd at 35C. Average day temperature was 32C (89F). Average night temperature was 23C (73F). Highest day temperature was 35C (95F). Highest night temperature was 27C (80F) on the 12th and 20th. Coolest days was 30C (86F) on the 1st, 20th and 22nd. Coolest night was 19C (66F) on the 22nd. Total rainfall was 3.2 inches (84mm) over three days.
