57 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in September 2016. A disapointing month species wise, but I put this down to the unseasonal weather. I.E. hot summer weather rather than the normal cooler autumnal weather. There was a first of the year record for Red-backed Shrike. There were first of the autumn records for Black Kite, Sand Martin, Spectacled Warbler and Common Redstart. There were last of the year records for Short-toed Eagle, Turtle Dove, Bee eater and Golden Oriole.. Typical September migrants were Eleonora´s Falcon, Whimbrel, Roller, Reed Warbler, Subalpine Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Common Nightingale, Common Redstart, Northern Wheatear. Some of the migrants were flying south in impressive numbers 9 Purple Herons, 140 Glossy Ibis, 1,800 Barn Swallows, and 400 House Martins. There were some surprising absentee’s Whinchat and Blue-headed Wagtail, and no Buntings. The first time there has been a clean sheet of these species in September for 15 years. On the plus side it was a record breaking September for Red-rumped Swallows with over 30 birds seen regularly. Alcossebre Weather for September 2016.
