51 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in September 2020. A new species was added to the Alcossebre list – a Rosy Faced Lovebird an escapee from someone´s collection. That brings the Alcossebre list up to 245 species. There were first of autumn records for Booted Eagle, Cetti´s Warbler and Blackcap. A full list of birds seen with comments follows. One or two Ring-necked Pheasants were heard and seen in the Rural farmland throughout the month. Great Cormorants were in low numbers - one to three birds seen, mainly on the Moor´s rock. Grey Herons passed through on five days, maximum 17 birds flying south over the sea on the 4th September. There was only one Little Egret seen this month – at the Torre estate pond. In contrast up to 10 Cattle Egrets were seen , mainly in the Rural farmlands. The first Booted Eagle of the autumn appeared on the 24th September, soaring above my house. Resident Common Kestrels were seen daily, one to three birds. The pair of Common Moorhens at Torre estate pond still had three juvenile birds in attendance. There was just one sighting of Stone Curlew, one in the dry Rio San Miquel river bedon the 20th September. There were two sightings of Whimbrel, one at the coast and one at Capycorp lagoon. Only three species of Gull were seen. A maximum of eight Black-headed Gulls, one to three Audoiun´s Gulls and up to 25 Yellow-legged Gulls. Once the tourists go home I expect larger numbers of Gulls and Terns roosting along the coast. Sandwich Terns – seen all the year here – were in low numbers with only one to three birds seen daily. Wood Pigeon numbers were increasing with wintering birds adding to the resident birds, up to 111 birds counted. Summering Turtle Doves were still seen up the month end, four birds maximum. Like the Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove numbers were increasing, with up to 90 birds counted. One to three resident Little Owls were heard or seen daily. A late summering Scops Owl was heard calling it´s loud sonar call on the 28th September. One or two Common Kingfishers were seen almost daily, either at Capycorp beach/lagoon or Torre estate pond. The last of the summer Bee eaters were seen on the 19th September – a flock of 20 birds flying south. Up to four resident Hoopoes were seen daily throughout the area. The last of summer Golden Oriole was seen on the 8th September. The resident Common Magpie numbers were being augmented by winter birds – up to 33 birds counted. Up to five resident Crested Larks were seen daily. Barn Swallows were passing through all month, heading south. Some days 600 birds per hour were going through on a broad front – a great sight to see. There were still some local bred bird around. Red-rumped Swallows were passing through too, but in much smaller numbers – maximum of 12 birds. House Martins were also flying south – maximum of 70 birds per hour. There were still some local bred birds ,e.g. At Capycorp apartments. Resident Great Tits were seen daily, but in low numbers, one to three birds. The first of autumn Cetti´s Warbler was heard calling loudly opposite Capycorp lagoon on the 19th September. The first of autumn Willow Warbler was seen on the 6th September, thereafter single birds seen daily. Much lower numbers than normal. Resident Zitting Cisticola´s were also in low numbers, only one or two birds seen daily. The first of autumn Blackcaps were seen on the 28th September, a male and female together. Up to 11 resident Sardinian Warblers were seen daily. One or two passage Spotted Flycatchers were seen throughout the month. In contrast only one passage Pied Flycatcher was seen, on the 21st September – very low numbers. A late Rufous Nightingale was seen on the 11th September. Resident Common Blackbirds were scarce with only single birds seen on three occasions. Common Starlings were seen daily, with flocks of over a 100 birds counted. Resident Spotless Starling numbers were much lower. Passage Blue-headed Wagtails were seen twice . Four birds on the 19th and 22nd September. Resident White Wagtails were seen daily, maximum four birds. Resident Finch numbers were augmented by in coming winter birds. Greenfinch maximum 22 birds, Goldfinch maximum 83 birds and Serin maximum 30 birds. The weather in Alcossbre September 2020.
Despite four thunderstorms we had lower than average rainfall and good temperatures. The first week in September had six fine sunny and hot days. There was some light rain on the 7th September -0.2 inches and a moderate wind. The rest of the days winds were gentle, north east for a time then east or south east. Temperatures were 2C above the day average and 1C above the night average . The second week in September started of with heavy overnight rain on the 8th September – 2,2 inches. Clearing to sunny/cloudy spells. The 9th started off with sunny/cloudy spells but soon cleared to fine and sunny. The rest of the week was settled with fine, sunny conditions. Winds were light to gentle, north east then east or south east later. Temperatures were 1C above the day average, and average for night. The third week in September was very mixed, with only one day giving fine, sunny weather. The rest saw more cloud than sunshine. We had two thunderstorms in the one day – on the 18th September, not unusual here. We had moderate winds on the 15th and 18th September. Temperatures were 1c above the day and night average. The fourth week in September started off with three unsettled days, with cloudy conditions and more thunderstorms. The rest of the week had some fine, sunny days, but with a moderate to strong north east winds, dropping the temperature. Temperatures were 1C below day and night average. The last two days of September had a feel of autumn about them, sunny but with high thin cloud cover and below average temperatures. Average day temperature was 28C (82F). 1C above average. Average night temperature was 19C (66F). Average for September. Highest day temperature was 31C (87F) on the 3rd September. Highest night temperature was 22C (72F) on the 16th,17th and 18th September. Coolest day temperature was 25C (77F) on the 29th September. Coolest night temperature was 14C (57F) on the 29th September. Total rainfall was 4.5 inches (115mm) over six days. Average for September is 5.2 inches.
