Alcossebre Weather for October 2020.
A very dry month (the driest October in 20 years!) with plenty of sunshine. Moderate winds kept the overall temperatures down. The first week in October had plenty of sunshine with the exception of 2nd October, which was overcast and dull with some light rain. We had two days with moderate to strong winds. Temperatures were 1C below night average and 1C above the day average. The second week in October was mixed with only two days of fine sunny weather. The other five days had overcast conditions, with moderate to strong winds on four days, bringing the temperature down. Temperatures were 2C below the average night, and 1C below the day average. The third week in October had four days with fine, sunny weather and thrre days of overcast conditions. We had moderate winds on three days, again dropping the temperature. Temperatures were 2C below the night average and 1C below the day average. The fourth week in October had more sunshine than cloud. There was one exception, the 22nd overcast and some light rain, clearing to mainly sunny. We had moderate winds on three days, the rest light and gentle. Temperatures were 2C below the night average, and 1C below the day average. The last three days in October were fine and settled with plenty of sunshine. Winds were light or gentle. Temperatures were still below average. Average day temperature was 23C (73F) Average night temperature was 14C (57F). Warmest day was 28C (82F) on the 7th October. Warmest night was 20C (68F) on the 22nd October. Coldest day was 21C (70F) on the 26th October. Coldest night was 9C (48F) on the 27th October. Total rainfall was 00.6 inches (2mm). Average rainfall for October is 5 inches of rain!

57 species were seen in the Alcossebre area in October 2020. No new species added to the list. 15 species arrived for the winter Marsh Harrier, Common Buzzard, Merlin, Northern Lapwing, Common Skylark, Crag Martin, European Robin, Black Redstart, Northern Wheatear, Stonechat, Song Thrush, Grey Wagtail, Meadow Pipit, Corn Bunting and Common Chaffinch. There was last of summer records for European Turtle Dove, Pallid Swift, Barn Swallow, Red-rumped Swallow, Common House Martin and Spotted Flycatcher. A list of the birds seen this month with comments follows. Up to three Red-legged Partridge were seen in the hunter free rural farm lands. Likewise single Common Pheasants were seen in the rural farm lands. Great Cormorants were seen daily, either on the Moors rock or passing through, e.g. 40 flew south on the 23rd October. Grey Herons passed through on two days, one flew east on the 4th, and two flew east on the 18th October. Little Egrets were scarce this month, with only two birds seen at the coast on the 17th October. In contrast up to 10 Cattle Egrets were seen daily in the rural farmlands. The first Marsh Harrier of winter was seen on the 1st October. The first Common Buzzard of winter was seen on the 23rd October. Resident Common Kestrels were seen daily, three birds maximum. A Merlin on the 13th October was the first of winter. Common Moorhen numbers increased at the Torre estate pond to 10 birds. The first Northern Lapwings of winter were seen on the 13th October – 10 birds. Only three species of Gull were seen. Five Black-headed Gulls flew south on the 15th October and 8 flew south on the 23rd October. Audouin´s Gulls (max. 12 birds) and Yellow -legged Gulls (max. 6 birds) were seen daily. Sandwich Terns were seen daily along the coast, maximum 20 birds. Resident Common Wood Pigeon numbers were augmented by winter birds, with 160 birds counted on the 8th October. The same applied to Collared Doves, with 190 birds counted on the 24th October The last of summer Turtle Doves were seen on the 9th October. Resident Little Owls were seen or heard daily. The last Pallid Swift of summer was seen on the 13th October. Common Kingfishers were seen daily, either at Capycorp lagoon or at the Torre estate pond. Resident Hoopoes were seen daily, maximum five birds. Resident Eurasian Magpie numbers were increased by winter birds, maximum 28 birds. Resident Crested Larks were seen daily, maximum 8 birds. The first of winter Skylarks were seen on the 17th October – 20 birds. The first of winter Crag Martins arrived on the 20th October, and by the 27th October up to 50 birds could be seen roosting in the apartment buildings in the centre of Alcossebre. The last of summer Barn Swallows were seen on the 28th October, up to the 8th of October 100´s per hour could be seen flying south. The last of summer Red-rumped Swallows were seen on the 5th October, with an impressive 62 birds counted in the rural farmland. The last of summer Common House Martins were seen on the 13th October. Resident Great Tits were seen daily, maximum four birds. Two Cetti´s Warbler continue to winter, a species heard more than seen. Only single passage Willow Warblers were seen, very low numbers. The first of winter Common Chiffchaffs were seen on the 15th October, numbers building up to 9 daily. Resident Zitting Cisticolas were seen daily, maximum four birds. Wintering Blackcap numbers were building up daily to a maximum of 24 birds. Resident Sardinian Warblers were also in good numbers, with up to 20 birds seen daily. The last of summer Spotted Flycatcher was seen on the 10th October. The first of winter European Robins were seen on the 10th October, and by the month end up to 9 birds seen daily. The first of winter Black Redstarts were seen on the 9th October, numbers increasing to 11 birds by the month end. Most were female birds. A passage Northern Wheatear was seen on the 9th October. The first of winter Stonechats arrived on the 6th October, numbers built up to 11 birds by the month end. Resident Eurasian Blackbird numbers were low with only three birds maximum. The first of winter Song Thrushes arrived on the 15th October, and by the month end 8 birds seen daily. The first of winter Grey Wagtail was seen on the 13th October, low numbers only one or two birds seen. Resident White Wagtail numbers were augmented by winter birds, maximum 13 birds. The first of winter Meadow Pipits arrived on the 17th October, and by the month end had increased to 39 birds. Two Corn Buntings seen on the 29th October were the first seen since the 5th April, they did not breed here this year. The first of winter Common Chaffinch arrived on the 15th October, and by the month end had increased to 43 birds.
Resident Greenfinch (max. 26 birds), Goldfinch ( max. 80 birds) and Serin (max. 50 birds) numbers were augmented by winter birds. |
