46 species were seen in the Alcossebre area during July 2017. There was a first of the year records for Montagu´s Harrier and Whimbrel. There were first of the year records for Common Sandpiper and Green Sandpiper There was a remarkable passage of Glossy Ibis - 225 birds over nine days! Considering this species was not recorded here before 2010 it represents quite an increase. Seven Grey Herons flew east on the 30th July. Two Great Egrets flew east on the 22nd July. Although Short-toed Eagles did not breed in the area this year there were two sightings of adults, one on the 13th and 31st July. A male Montagu´s Harrier seen on the 12th July was the first this year. Single Common Sandpipers were seen from the 14th July -the first this autumn - at Capicorp lagoon or Torre de Capicorp pond. Single Green Sandpipers seen from the 10th July were also the first of autumn. A Whimbrel seen at the coast by Paul Harvey was the first this year. A juvenile Great Spotted Cuckoo on the 20th July was the only record this month. One or two Little Owls were seen daily, but only one Scops Owl was heard. Single Red-necked Nightjars were seen up to the 17th July. Feeding movements of Common and Pallid Swifts were noted on the 2nd, 9th, 25th and 26th with hundreds of birds involved. Up to four Bee eaters were seen locally throughout the month. Passage birds were noted on the 20th (10 birds) and the 31st (36 birds). A juvenile Woodchat Shrike on the 13th was the only record this month. July is the best month to see Golden Oriole´s here - up to nine birds seen daily. Local Barn Swallows numbers swelled daily as more family parties joined up. Peak numbers on the 23rd July with 128 birds noted. Up to six Red-rumped Swallows were seen amongst the Barn Swallows. House Martins continued to be fairly low, with a maximum of 25 birds noted. The only warblers seen were Zitting Cisticola´s - max. 6 birds, and Sardinian Warbler´s - max. 7 birds. For the first time in 15 years no Melodious Warbler´s were seen! The local pair of Spotted Flycatchers were seen with two juvenile´s and had moved on by the end of the month.
